This well respected family run funeral directors possessed the foresight in preparing their premises for the next sixty years of business. The key factor in the implementation of a new chapel of rest, ancillary accommodation and specialist garages was to give consideration to the close proximity of housing and privacy of both neighbouring properties and users of this building. The outcome is a building which is peaceful, spiritual and sympathetic to its use.

A farmhouse which lay amongst rolling fields was found by a family of four who sought a building to call home. With the building in need of attention and a growing family, a modern extension was offered without detracting from the character of a typical Welsh farmhouse. This modern intervention offered the open space of modern living; a kitchen and dining area with the addition of an en-suite master bedroom and walk in wardrobe at first floor. The way light enters the new extension and views which are framed by generous apertures make this a comfortable and inspiring place to call home.

With the organic growth of this family run funeral directors came the need for the expansion of their existing premises. A generous addition to accommodate the aspirations of this forward thinking funeral director included an extension to the existing chapel of rest with external covered areas, larger ancillary accommodation and specialist garages for funeral vehicles. Warm and colourful materials have been used to provide an establishment which is both sympathetic and soulful, allowing some comfort to be felt by the visitors of this building.

With the constraints of this soulful cottage being located in a conservation area and an area of outstanding natural beauty, real consideration was needed to provide this caring family with the additional space derived out of living in a house fit for St. Fagan National Museum Wales. Being commissioned by a client who had already given consideration to their environmental impact, a real showcase for sustainable architecture has resulted in the use of sheep wool, woodfibre insulation boards, wool wood boards and lime mortars. Furthermore, a client requirement was to eliminate their need to rely on oil with the introduction of an air source heat pump, solar thermal panels and PV solar panels.

‘We approached Samuel Harris with an idea of creating a comfortable, bright and well proportioned annex but with the constraints of a small building plot. Samuel Harris helped us in defining a clear design brief, centered to the specific needs of our small family. Their insight and forward-thinking approach to the brief allowed us to become part of the process, which in itself was an exciting and awe-inspiring experience. Their resulting solution brought together a clear and concise understanding of our essential requirements, breathing life into this challenging plot.’

With a steep north facing site, the prospect of providing a sustainable and inkeeping response was inevitably going to be a challenge. From getting a greater understanding of the typography, wind direction and movement of the sun, these fundamentally became the driving force to arriving at this design response. With clients who had a desire to draw on the qualities typically found within the spaces of Welsh farmhouses, research of scale, proportion and aperture sizes were undertaken. The house being centred around an external courtyard and the introduction of large apertures encompassing the surrounding views will hopefully make this house a comfortable place to live.

This existing car park forms part of the Swansea City Strategic Plan. The site is situated between the Dylan Thomas Centre and SA1 Waterfront development via the existing sail bridge. The site has been arranged as to formalise a street along this already busy footpath, lined with high end boutiques, restaurants, cafes and bars. The development also introduces housing making the most for the spectacular views offered by this site but also arranged to create private courtyards to encourage occupant ownership.

Tourism – 20no. 1/2 bed log cabins
Residential – 16no. 2, 3 & 4 bed dwellings

A site of which used to play host to a privately kept gardens, open to the public seasonally has come to the table as a potential opportunity to provide exclusive self catering accommodation to aid the tourism sector within the county of Pembrokeshire. Enlarging the existing lake and introducing off-grid units, sparsely set amongst the gardens, will provide a place for spiritual and relaxing holidays.

When asked to design a small addition to a dwelling its always nice to add interesting design features which inevitably enriches the quality of life for the occupants. Typically these elements are very simple but significant, justifying why having a trained designer to implement the changes you make to your home adds value. This addition offers a master bedroom at first floor with the introduction of open plan kitchen dinner to rear. With the implementation of a sculptured light well and curved wall which will act a spectacle, playing on the movement of the sun and adding interest to what would have been a dark and dreary space due to the aspect of this dwelling.
